Hindus observe Diwali by celebrating the return of the deities, Rama and Sita, to Ayodhya after 14 years in exile. For Sikhs, it marks the 1619 release of the sixth guru, Hargobind Singh, from prison. However, the festival’s significance dates back further—Sikhs had already been celebrating Diwali before this. Notably, the foundation stone for the Golden Temple, Sikhism’s holiest site, was laid on Diwali in 1577.
Jains, on the other hand, commemorates Lord Mahavira’s attainment of Moksha (nirvana, or eternal bliss) during this festival. Diwali typically falls between October and November, with this year’s celebrations beginning on Tuesday, October 29, to Sunday, November 3, with the main celebrations on Friday, November 1.
